Diminished value claims in Portland

Yes against the at-fault driver: Oregon cases have long measured vehicle damage as the drop in value, and ORS 20.080 can add attorney fees for claims up to $10,000. Against your own insurer, it depends on the policy. Gonzales v. Farmers (2008) required payment where a policy's 'repair' promise was not met, but insurers may exclude diminished value, and at least one major current Oregon policy form does.

What to check on a Portland-area vehicle

In January 2024 the Portland Bureau of Transportation, citing National Weather Service forecasts, warned of 0.2–0.5 inch of freezing rain that makes streets and bridges treacherous and fells trees and limbs.

Winter losses can include slide collisions and falling-limb damage; confirm the date and cause of loss in the claim record.

Comparables

The Portland–Vancouver–Hillsboro metro area (OR–WA) vehicle market

The Portland–Vancouver–Hillsboro metro area had an estimated 2.54 million residents on July 1, 2025 (Census Bureau) and spans Oregon and Washington, so comparable listings may come from both states.

An Autoloss appraisal compares your vehicle with similar vehicles offered where it would realistically be sold, with and without accident history, then accounts for the damage, repair quality, mileage and equipment. Our methodology.

“Terry, thanks for your help. I settled for $2929, which was your estimate and Farmers’ divided by two, but they said as policy they would not reimburse for the appraisal. I am actually fine with it as prior to talking with you I would have not gotten anything at all. I gave your contact to someone who had their car backed into. (John Finn – Portland, Oregon)”

Individual results vary based on the vehicle, evidence, insurer, state, coverage, and circumstances of each claim. Past results do not guarantee a similar outcome.
