Diminished value on a Tesla after a repaired accident
A repaired Tesla can lose market value like any other car, and the loss is measured the same way, with comparable sales. What is specific to a Tesla is the evidence. Tesla publishes its own repair rules for parts, approved shops and the large castings in the Model Y and Cybertruck. The repair file should show those rules were followed, along with calibration and software records.

What is different about a Tesla claim
Diminished value is the gap between what the car was worth just before the accident and what it is worth once repaired. That definition does not change for a Tesla. What changes is the paperwork. Tesla publishes detailed body repair procedures, approves its own network of body shops, sells driver-assistance software that is part of some cars’ price, and sells insurance under its own name in some states. Each of these leaves a record, and the records decide how the next buyer reads the repair.
The questions every electric vehicle raises, about the high-voltage battery and post-repair inspection, are covered in our guide to electric vehicles. This page covers what Tesla adds. Autoloss is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Tesla. The company’s name and published documents are used here only to identify them.
Who repaired the car, and with which parts
Tesla’s Model Y parts and accessories page tells owners that after a collision they should “contact Tesla or a Tesla-approved Body Shop” so the car is repaired with genuine Tesla parts. It says Tesla has approved body shops that meet its requirements for training, equipment, quality and customer satisfaction (checked November 2026).
The same page says that “some repair shops and insurance companies might suggest using non-original equipment or salvaged parts to save money.” It states that non-original and salvaged parts, and any damage or failures they cause, are not covered by the warranty. That matters to value. A buyer or dealer who sees non-Tesla parts in a Tesla repair file has a reason to pay less, and a warranty question to price in.
Two facts are worth recording for any Tesla repair:
- Whether the shop was Tesla-approved on the date of the repair. A dated screenshot of Tesla’s shop locator is enough.
- Whether the final invoice lists genuine Tesla parts. If the insurer’s estimate called for used or aftermarket parts, keep that estimate as well as the invoice that shows what was actually installed.
Model Y castings: structural repairs with strict limits
The Model Y rear underbody is a large aluminum casting rather than many stamped parts joined together. Tesla’s Model Y collision repair manual has separate procedures for one-piece and two-piece rear underbody castings, and the manual for Model Y vehicles with a structural battery pack adds a cast front underbody. Each casting has its own repair guidelines, which divide it into colored zones:
| Zone (as Tesla labels it) | What the guidelines allow |
|---|---|
| Blue (tabs) | Broken tabs may be welded back. Bent tabs may be straightened with cold methods. |
| Green | Weld repair of damage up to 50 mm. Longer damage needs help from Tesla Collision Repair. |
| Yellow | Weld repair up to 30 mm, or 30–50 mm with a Tesla reinforcement plate. Longer damage needs Tesla’s help. |
| Orange | A crack up to 30 mm may be welded, with a reinforcement plate. Longer damage needs Tesla’s help. |
| Red | “None; if the Rear Under Body is damaged in these areas, contact Tesla Collision Repair for assistance.” Welding is not allowed. |
The guidelines say damage that crosses zone boundaries should not be repaired without prior approval from Tesla Collision Repair, and that if a casting cannot be fixed under a listed procedure, “the entire Cast Rear Under Body may have to be replaced.” Tesla’s Model Y structural repair guidelines also say that “Tesla does not support the pulling or pushing of any component using frame straightening equipment,” and its materials page says cast and extruded aluminum parts can only be repaired as specified for each component (checked November 2026).
For value, casting work is structural repair history, the item buyers and dealers react to most. A file that names the zone, the procedure used, any reinforcement plate and any written approval from Tesla answers the next buyer’s question. A file that says only “rear body repair” leaves the question open. Our guide on whether a car is safe after frame repair explains why structural work weighs on price even when it is done correctly.
Cybertruck: stainless steel panels
Cybertruck body panels are unpainted stainless steel. Tesla’s Cybertruck repair manual says scratches can be removed by sanding, but that sanding “may result in a change in the appearance of the repair area.” It also says the entire flat area of the panel containing the repair must be refinished, and “the same plane across all panels on the same side of the vehicle must also be refinished.” A dent in one panel can therefore mean refinishing along a whole side. The invoice should list every panel that was worked on, so a later buyer can tell refinishing from damage.
Camera calibration and the battery
Tesla’s Model Y owner documentation says the cameras calibrate themselves over roughly 20–25 miles of driving, that some features, such as Lane Departure Avoidance and Automatic Emergency Braking, cannot be used until calibration is complete, and that the calibration must be cleared if a camera has shifted, for example after a camera or windshield replacement (checked November 2026). For the repair file, ask for:
- Pre-repair and post-repair diagnostic scan records.
- A note that camera calibration was cleared and completed after the repair.
- Confirmation that driver-assistance features were working when you collected the car.
For an underbody or side impact, ask in writing whether the high-voltage battery was inspected and what was found. Tesla publishes a separate repair manual for Model Y vehicles with a structural battery pack, so record which version your car is. The general battery questions are in our electric vehicles guide.
Software and the pre-loss value
Two Teslas of the same model and year can differ in price because of trim, motors, battery, wheels and purchased software such as Enhanced Autopilot or Full Self-Driving (FSD). Engadget reported on January 14, 2026 that Tesla would stop selling FSD in the US as an $8,000 one-time purchase after February 14, 2026, and offer it only as a monthly subscription. Tesla’s rules on whether purchased software stays with a car, transfers to a new one or counts in a trade-in have changed several times, so we do not state them here.
For the appraisal, what matters is what your car had on the date of loss. Send the order agreement or window sticker and a screenshot of the car’s software or upgrades screen. A subscription belongs to the account, not the car, and is treated differently from a one-time purchase. For a car only months old, read new and nearly new cars: most of the reasons a recent car loses more apply to a recent Tesla.
Tesla Insurance and which claim you have
Tesla sells insurance under its own name in a limited number of states. The insurance trade publication Coverager reported it in 13 states after Florida was added. We could not confirm the current list on Tesla’s own site in November 2026, so check it before relying on it.
Which side Tesla Insurance is on decides the kind of claim. If it insures you, a diminished value claim on your own policy depends on that policy’s wording and your state’s law, and many policies do not pay it. If it insures the at-fault driver, you are a third-party claimant, as with any other insurer. Our page on first-party vs third-party claims explains the difference, and diminished value laws by state sets out the rules where you live. This is general information, not legal advice. What buyers and history reports see
A vehicle-history report can show that damage was reported. It does not show which casting zone was repaired, whether the parts were genuine or whether calibration was done. A careful buyer or dealer asks for those answers, and a repair file that supplies them limits how much uncertainty is priced in. It does not remove the accident from the record. The general reasons buyers discount repaired cars are in how accident history affects resale value. If a dealer told you the car no longer qualifies for a certified program after the repair, get that in writing; certified pre-owned vs non-certified value explains why it matters.
Records to collect for a Tesla appraisal
- The final repair invoice with every supplement, and the parts list with Tesla part numbers.
- The shop’s name and its Tesla-approved status on the repair date.
- Photos of the damage, of the repair in progress (especially any casting area) and of the finished car.
- Diagnostic scan and calibration records, and any battery inspection result.
- Any written approval or instruction from Tesla Collision Repair.
- The order agreement or window sticker, mileage at the date of loss, and a screenshot of the software or upgrades screen.
- The insurer’s estimate, offer or denial letter.
Our claim document checklist covers the general records. A diminished value appraisal uses these records and comparable Teslas, with and without accident history, to measure the loss. It is a valuation, not a repair inspection, and it does not promise any amount. A typical diminished-value appraisal costs $250–$350, and reports are typically 24–48 hours after all required information is received. Common questions
Can I claim diminished value on a Tesla Model Y?
In many states a claim against the at-fault driver’s insurer is possible for any repaired vehicle, including a Model Y. Rules vary by state. The loss has to be shown with comparable vehicles and the repair records.
Does it matter if a Tesla-approved body shop did the repair?
It can. Tesla tells owners to use Tesla or a Tesla-approved body shop and genuine Tesla parts, and says non-original and salvaged parts are not covered by the warranty. Repair records showing both answer a buyer’s first questions.
My Model Y had rear casting damage. Is that structural?
Yes. The rear underbody casting is part of the body structure, and Tesla’s manual limits how and where it may be repaired. Keep the shop’s notes on which zone was repaired and any approval from Tesla Collision Repair.
Does Full Self-Driving count in the value?
The appraisal values the car as it was configured on the date of loss. Send the order agreement and a screenshot of the software or upgrades screen. A subscription is tied to the account and is treated differently from a one-time purchase.
